Center for Clinical Research
Clinical research is essential to learn whether medications work and are safe. In clinical trials, investigational drugs are often compared with approved drugs vs placebo (inactive pill, liquid or powder that has no treatment value). Investigational drugs that are found to be safe and effective may then become available for doctors to prescribe.
Our Staff
We have a dedicated team to provide very close monitoring during study participation. The Director of the Clinical Research Team is Carol Duma. A physician is designated as the Principle Investigator for each trial. The rest of the team includes Clinical Research Coordinators Judy Carter, Sara Duma and Susan Flaherty. Paul Seney is a Clinical Research Assistant and Kathleen Bain Busch, MS FNP CDE meets with patients to help ensure everyone gets what they need. Lawrence Robinson, MS MD MBA is the Managing Director of the division and supervises operations.
Potential Benefits of Study Participation
Participants in clinical trials can play a more active role in their own health care, gain access to new research treatments before they are widely available, and help others by contributing to medical research.
Study participants receive study-related medical care at no cost, including physical exams, laboratory tests, study-related medication and possible compensation for time and travel.
Informed Consent
If you are eligible for and interested in participating in a study, an informed consent document will be presented to you. This document includes extensive information about the clinical trial; the purpose, procedures, benefits, risks, discomforts and precautions of the study. It also describes the alternative procedures that are available to you. Before agreeing to participate in a research study, it is important that you read the informed consent document carefully and understand the explanation of the purposed research study. You are encouraged to ask questions. When you are satisfied that all of your questions have been answered, you can then decide for yourself if participation in a trial is right for you or not.
